Mari Mata Temple is located near Yahiyaganj, Nakkhas, in the old part of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most revered and ancient Hindu temples in the city.
Mari Mata Temple is dedicated to Goddess Mari Mata, a local deity believed to be a protector against diseases and plagues. The temple holds immense cultural and spiritual importance among the residents of Lucknow, especially those from the old city areas.
The temple is more than 200 years old, and is considered a historic landmark of Lucknow.
The word โMariโ is derived from โMaranโ (meaning death), and Mari Mata is worshipped as the Goddess who saves lives and wards off evil spirits, infections, and diseases.
In earlier times, during outbreaks of smallpox, cholera, and other diseases, people would pray to Mari Mata for protection and healing.
It is said that the Nawabs of Awadh respected the temple and allowed its activities to continue even during Muslim rule, showing its cross-cultural reverence.
Devotees believe that offering mustard oil, red cloth, and lemons to the Goddess can remove negative energy and bring peace.
Some locals believe that Mari Mata appears in dreams to give warnings or blessings.
The temple is especially visited by those who feel they are under the influence of black magic or spirits.
The Navratri festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Special poojas, bhajans, and jagrans are organized.
