Built in: 1784
Commissioned by: Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula
Purpose: Part of a famine relief project during a severe famine in Awadh (present-day Uttar Pradesh). The construction provided employment to thousands.
The structure was inspired by the Sublime Porte (Bab-i-Humayun) in Istanbul, Turkey, which is why it's often referred to as the "Turkish Gate".
Rumi refers to Rome or the Roman/Byzantine Empire, pointing to the cultural influence from the Ottoman Empire.
Style: Awadhi architecture (a blend of Mughal and Turkish design)
Height: Approximately 60 feet (18 meters)
Material Used: Mainly brick and lime plaster
Design Details:
Grand central arch with floral motifs and intricate carvings.
Ornate umbrella-shaped chhatris (domes) on top.
No wood or iron used; it's an engineering marvel made only of interlocking bricks and plaster.
Beautiful lanterns used to be placed on top during the Nawabi era to illuminate it at night.
A symbol of Lucknow's rich Nawabi heritage and architectural excellence.
A representation of "tehzeeb" (etiquette), elegance, and grandeur of the city.
Appears in countless artworks, photographs, films, and cultural references related to Lucknow.
Rumi Darwaza is located between Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara β a major stop in the Heritage Walk of Lucknow.
Entry is free for all visitors.
Best time to visit: October to March (pleasant weather).
Nearby attractions:

Chota Imambara
Clock Tower

Hussainabad Picture Gallery
One of the most photographed monuments in India.
Often used in tourism campaigns and logos representing Lucknow.
Maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Even today, the Rumi Darwaza stands as a pride of Lucknow, blending the past with the present.
The monument was constructed without using steel or cement β a fine example of Mughal engineering.
During Nawabi times, a huge lantern would light up the top of the gate and water would cascade from the sides.
It is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a gate to a palace, but it is actually a freestanding gateway.
Rumi Darwaza is not just an architectural structure β itβs a symbol of survival, beauty, and cultural heritage. Built during a time of distress, it now stands as one of India's finest pieces of Mughal-inspired design and is a must-visit for anyone exploring Lucknow.
