🕉️ About the Temple

Shri Mankameshwar Mandir is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in Lucknow. The name “Mankameshwar” comes from two Sanskrit words:

  • Man (मन) – Mind or desire

  • Kamna (कामना) – Wish or desire
    It is believed that Lord Shiva fulfills all true wishes (manokamna) of his devotees who visit this temple with devotion.


🏛️ Historical Significance

  • The exact date of origin is unknown, but it is considered ancient and mythologically significant.

  • The temple has strong roots in Hindu tradition, and is considered one of the “Mankameshwar” Jyotirling-style temples found in various cities like Agra, Varanasi, Ujjain, etc.

  • The current temple structure and its popularity were revived and expanded due to the efforts of Shri Mahant Devya Giriji, the present head priest (Mahant) of the temple.

  • A Shivlinga is enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha).

🏯 Architecture

  • Inner sanctum houses the black stone Shivling, surrounded by idols of Nandi, Ganesh, Parvati, etc.

  • The temple complex is clean, peaceful, and decorated with religious symbols and murals.

  • A Gomti ghat (Kudiya Ghat) nearby is used by devotees for ritual bathing before entering the temple.
