Bara Imambara, also known as Asafi Imambara, is one of the most famous historical monuments in Lucknow. It is not just an architectural wonder but also a symbol of cultural and spiritual significance for Shia Muslims. Built in the late 18th century, it serves as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims, especially during the festival of Muharram.
Bara Imambara was commissioned by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784, during a severe famine.
The main goal was famine relief—thousands of people were employed for its construction, which provided them livelihood.
A unique system was followed: laborers built during the day, while nobles dismantled parts at night to prolong employment.
The construction continued for over 14 years, and the total cost went up to one million rupees.
Designed by Kifayatullah, a prominent architect of that era, the structure blends Mughal and Persian architectural styles.
The central hall of the Imambara is bare of any beams or pillars, yet it spans over 50 meters—making it one of the largest such arched constructions in the world.
The use of Lakhauri bricks, lime plaster, and intricate carvings adds to its elegance.
